Some Thoughts On Boredom

Those who live in the Northwest know that we have been in the midst of snow, ice and rough road conditions. School has been canceled these past two days and some are predicting school winter break will start a whole week early.

I just had to share a few thoughts. What is it about snow days from a young persons perspective that is so different from an adults perspective? I found it so interesting that when the weatherman was predicting school closers on Sunday night for Monday am, kids everywhere screamed, "YEAH A SNOW DAY!!" And now that we are on day two of our school closures, I seem to hear "I'm bored from being stuck at home...need to get out!"

I think part of these thoughts of boredom from a child's perspctive comes from the fact that so much of their physical and phychological makeup is engrained in a social need for relationship, for friendship. They dislike the requirements of school, for the most part, but thrive off of the social interactions.

But I'm also inclined to believe that all of us, adults and children alike, don't understand how to take time out of busyness to enjoy a different change of pace, myself included. I probably won't need to go into the coffee shop today and am enjoying a different pace in my day, the opportunity to get things done around home and just relax a bit.

Boredom is not all it's cracked up to be. I just don't think we know what to do with free time because our bodies aren't use to stopping and resting. Hmmm something to think about! Are we actually bored or at a loss for how to actually spend time outside of our normal insane lives?!

Those are REALLY good points! I was sitting around here just yesterday complaining of the sheer boredom that seemed to dwell inside me. Today, though, I am going to look at it from a whole different perspective. Amazing how reading something first thing in the morning can influence your ENTIRE day!! Thanks!!
