Blackberry Oatmeal

This morning I tried a new version of oatmeal that I actually really liked. I got the idea from the food network and one of my favorite new cooks, Ellie Krieger She is a food nutitionalist chef and I love her very practical ideas for healthy eating and cooking.

Here is Ellie's version and then I'll explain what I did differently:

Cherry Vanilla Oatmeal

1 3/4 cups water
1 cup Old Fashioned Oats
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup dried cherries
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 Tablespoons cherry jam, or to taste
1/4 cup 1 percent low fat milk

Make it how you normally would make oatmeal, adding all the new things like vanilla and cherries. When it's done, add the jam and milk.

Okay, what I did is make it with frozen blackberries and homemade blackberry freezer jam I made this summer. So instead of cherries, I used blackberries and blackberry jam. Also, when it was done I added some walnuts, because I like those in my oatmeal. You can adjust sweetness. I added just about a teaspoon of dark brown sugar and it was AMAZING! Smells delicious as well with the vanilla (it smells like warm scones just removed from the oven!). Enjoy!
